Day Tripping, a series of watercolours by Grace Chan, has opened on the Staff Art Wall at University Hospital Waterford (UHW) and is on show until 7 November 2024.

Grace Chan has been working as a Consultant Microbiologist in the Microbiology Department at UHW since September 2021. From 2016 to 2018, Grace worked as a Clinical Registrar at UHW. This is Grace’s second exhibition on the Staff Art Wall.

Grace’s favourite subjects to paint are the rural and urban landscapes of the south-east, and the people and animals that inhabit these spaces. Grace enjoys urban sketching with the Waterford Sketchers Group, and recently began plein air day tripping with the South East Plein Air (SEPA) Group.

Grace loves to capture the “moment” in her work, which is evident in the movement, fluidity and spontaneity of her brushwork and in her vibrant use of colour. The medium of watercolour enables her to do this, as it allows her to work quickly, painting live scenes that portray action and atmosphere.  The resulting ‘moments’ capture snapshots of life, memories and stories. This Day Tripping collection emerged from Grace’s recent work this summer in plein air paint-outs around the south-east.

The Staff Art Wall is an initiative of Waterford Healing Arts which aims to celebrate the creativity of staff working at UHW by providing an opportunity to display their work at the hospital.
